Can Carpeting Be Saved for Freehold Homes with Water Damage?
Dameion Simon • November 12, 2019

Whenever people talk about water damage
in the home, they always mention the carpet. Your carpet covers much, if not all, of the floor and is quite porous. The material soaks up a lot of water from an appliance leak or burst pipe. Before long, the entire thing must be thrown away because you can’t risk your health or your home any further.
Can the carpet be saved after water damage, though? Is your beloved rug destined for the dumpster? Let’s explore water damage as a whole to better understand how and when you need to toss out a water-damaged carpet.
Types of Water Damage
First, it’s important to understand the types of water damage. There are actually three primary categories of water damage and, depending on which you’re dealing with, these categories will determine whether or not you lose your carpet.
- Category 1 — Clean water damage typically stems from a broken water supply line or other sanitary source and has affected your home for under 48 hours.
- Category 2 — Gray water damage often stems from bath or shower water, washing machine overflow, or the like. It is slightly contaminated and has likely affected your home for just over 48 hours at this point.
- Category 3 — Black water damage is highly contaminated and extremely dangerous. It stems from a sewage backup or groundwater flooding and contains harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites.
How Water Damage Affects Your Carpet
Again, it all depends on the type of water damage as to how the whole situation affects your carpet.
- Category 1 — If the water damage occurred less than 48 hours prior, then a water damage restoration expert can usually salvage the carpet and padding using specialized equipment. However, if 48 hours have passed, then category 1 water damage will escalate due to the bacteria and mold likely to be growing in the carpet.
- Category 2 — If there is gray water covering the carpet, the pad is likely destroyed. In some cases, the carpet itself can be salvaged using wet vacuums and water extraction methods. However, the microbes, mold spores, and bacteria must be thoroughly treated.
- Category 3 — Unfortunately, due to the contamination found in black water damage, both the carpet and padding must be thrown away. The flooring underneath will also require thorough treatment and sanitization solutions.
