Fire safety during the holidays is important. As Lorraine Carli, vice president of NFPA’s Outreach and Advocacy division, has said , “By knowing where potential fire hazards exist and taking the needed steps to prevent them, people can enjoy the season’s celebrations and traditions while keeping their families, guests and homes safe.”
If you have any safety concerns or questions this holiday season, you can contact the Freehold Township Independent Fire Company at (732) 431-3662.
Below are a few fire safety tips and facts to get you started.
- Decorating Safely — Many of the decorations we throw up during the holidays are, unfortunately, fire hazards. According to the Red Cross , decorations like trees and lights are common causes of house fires.
- Picking Holiday Trees — You'll need to decide between an artificial tree or a fresh holiday tree. Both have their drawbacks and benefits, but you must care for either one to avoid a fire.
- Candle Concerns — The holidays are the most common time of the year to light candles — scented, menorahs and kinaras. Keep these lit candles three feet from flammable objects.
- Safe Cooking — Whether you're baking or frying a turkey, safety in the kitchen is paramount. Do not leave the stovetop unattended. If you do decide to fry a turkey, do so outdoors and away from structures.
