The holidays are supposed to be about fun and family. Too few of us spend time thinking about fire safety, though we should. The holiday season is the number one time of the year when home fires occur. The most common cause? An unattended kitchen. That’s a simple fix!
Here at Restoration 1 of Freehold, we don’t believe taking a holiday off. No matter the day, we’ll be here for you!
How Do Home Cooking Fires Get Started?
Cooking has long been the leading cause of house fires. After all, where else do you work with an open flame in your home? During the holidays, it can be easy to step away from the flames thinking that you have a moment or two, but you should never leave the stove or oven unattended. It’s dangerous and potentially deadly.
According to the NFPA, December 25th is the second-worst day for holiday cooking-related fires. Do not become another statistic on their list.
Easy Ways to Prevent Holiday Home Cooking Fires?
If your goal is to prevent a fire, here are a few simple ways to stay safe in the kitchen.

- Test Smoke Detectors — Before you start your holiday cooking, test each smoke detector and replace the batteries as needed.
- Grease Fires — You do not use water to extinguish a grease fire on the stove. Instead, smother the fire by slowly covering the pan with the appropriate lid.
- Appliances — Any appliances not in use, like a toaster or slow-cooker, should be unplugged.
