What's the Best Way for Monmouth County Homeowners to Create an Emergency Disaster Plan?
Dameion Simon • December 10, 2019

There are few among us who truly think about an emergency
in or around the home. None of us want to imagine the worst-case scenario. We should, though. By considering the drastic situation that follows a kitchen fire or flood, we can better prepare.
How do you prepare your home? The first step is by creating an emergency disaster plan. Your plan can be tailored to your home, family, and personal needs. Then, you can focus on a disaster preparedness kit, with all of the necessity for your well-being and safety.
Make an Emergency Disaster Plan
The first step is to make your plan. First, knowing what types of disasters could affect your area is ever-important. You may be facing a house fire, flood, or some type of natural disaster. No matter the situation, keeping everyone safe is the goal.
Step 1: Answer the four key questions with your family to start your emergency disaster plan.
- How will I state up-to-date with emergency alerts and warnings?
- What is my shelter plan?
- Do I know the evacuation route?
- What is the family communication plan?
Step 2: Consider the specific needs of your household based on a few key factors.
- Different ages of each member
- Responsibilities within the family for helping others
- Dietary needs
- Medical needs
- Disabilities or access requirements
- Languages spoken
- Pets or service animals
Step 3: Fill out a family emergency plan. Thankfully, FEMA has an Emergency Plan for Parents
that you can download and complete or use as a guide to create your own disaster preparedness plan.
Emergency Preparedness Kit
Now, it’s time to look at your supplies. Everyone should have an emergency preparedness kit ready to go in the event of a disaster. You may keep it in a coat closet near to the door or in the garage by the car for easy access. Either way, yours should be stocked with the following items:
- Enough food and water for three days minimum per person or pet
- Flashlights with extra batteries.
- A can opener
- Cell phones and appropriate chargers or extra batteries
- Blankets and sleeping bags
- Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and other sanitary items
- A first aid kit
- Extra cash
- Extra clothing
You never know where you’re going or how long you’re going to stay there, so bring everything you think you might need in one easy-to-grab bag.
