Three Things That Could Lead to Mold Growth in Your Home

Mold is a fast-acting fungus that will begin to grow within 24 hours of a water spill or other moisture source, if the conditions are right. A mold outbreak is not something you ever want to have in your home for an extended period of time, for with continual exposure, mold can prove quite detrimental to your health. Here are three things that can lead to mold growth in your homethat perhaps you haven’t thought too much about.

1. Pipes

Any damage to plumbing pipes that results in water escaping can lead to mold growth, unless the right steps are taken. The worst part about a broken pipe or a leak is that the full extent of damage is often under the surface – it can require walls to be opened up, and so on. Once a pipe issue is discovered, it’s best to act quickly to prevent any more water damagefrom setting in. Have a professional determine the cause of the escaping water, and replace or repair the pipes. Afterward, it’s time to get things dried out, removing every ounce of moisture before you begin any permanent restoration. You should have fans going around the clock, and you should especially use dehumidifiers in the affected area. These will help fend off mold growth as the area continues to dry.

2. Flooding

Last August, we watched from afar as Hurricane Harvey tore through the city of Houston, Texas. Hundreds of homes experienced flooding and by the end of the storm, millions of dollars worth of damage was done to the entire city. While this event was historic and unprecedented for the region, many had never experienced flooding in their homes before. Unfortunately, the result of that much water in a naturally humid region will be mold. The situation could only become worse with a lack of electricity, which is also a likely result of severe weather. After the storm has passed, you need to get the water out as soon as possible. The best way to do this is using wet vacuums, which reputable home restoration companies would have. The next steps are the same: dry and dehumidify. The unfortunate reality is that large-scale water events can take weeks to fully dry, making mold a likely result that will need professional removal.

3. Poor Ventilation

According to Moldpedia, a poorly ventilated home is at a much higher risk for developing a mold outbreak. This is primarily because pockets of moist air form, especially in rooms where there is a lot of steam (such as a bathroom). The steam and evaporation create humid conditions in the home – and if not properly vented out, mold could start to grow. This is why you want to have a top-notch fan in all of your bathrooms with a shower, and remember always to turn it on when you are bathing. One of the top places to find mold in most homes is the bathroom – prevent it early-on if you can.
