If you hear the phrase “types of water” and it is does not make sense to you, that is completely normal. In fact, you are like most people; many do not realize that there are actually three different types of water that can affect your property, and the water damagecaused by each is approached differently by professionals. It is important to know the differences between all three as they denote the level of contamination, but you should always approach water damage with caution regardless of its type. Here are the three types of water that can cause damage to your Freehold County home:

The Most Harmless: Clean Water

“Clean” water is just that: clean. It is purified water from your plumbing system that will not cause you any physical harm, though you should note that even clean water can develop into a mold infestationif left untreated. If you have a water emergency like a burst pipe, leak from your sink, or another similar plumbing complication, your main priority is to act quickly to minimize the damage. If the water has had time to set in and is widespread, consider hiring a professional water damage restoration company, as they will have the resources to clean, dry, and dehumidify the area quickly.

The Middle: Gray Water

“Gray” water is right in the middle in regard to its contamination levels. It definitely contains at least some contamination, though it’s not anywhere near the level of contamination as the most dangerous type of water. Gray water may contain certain chemicals or urine that will require a deeper cleaning. Examples of other contaminants that could be in gray water include: soap, detergent, food particles, hair, debris, and more. If you have an overflow from your kitchen sink, or your dishwasher or washing machine leaks mid-cycle, you may have gray water damage.

The Most Severe: Black Water

“Black” water is aptly named due to where it comes from and what it could contain. If your home floods from a natural disaster, or if you experience a sewer backup into your home, these are two prime examples of black water. Keep in mind that gray water left to sit for an extended period of time will eventually become black water. If you have black water in your home, it can contain chemicals, bacteria, pesticides, waste, debris, and more harmful, hazardous components. The cleanup for a case of black water is incredibly extensive, and involves large-scale disinfection of the premises.
